Dutch Culture in a European Context

Utrecht University
Faculty of Humanities
Course code: C3
Bachelor level

In the first two weeks students will analyse how national cultures are affected by and react to the European integration process. Subsequently they will focus on the national identity of the various countries to help understand the complicated structure of Europe and the motives for integration as well as the obstacles on the way to European unity. An excursion to Brussels (the seat of the European Commission) is included.

In the next four weeks the course will focus further on the Dutch identity, including issues as tolerance and ‘pillarization’. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the rich cultural traditions that the Netherlands developed from the Dutch Golden Age to the present day in painting, literature, poetry and filmmaking.
