TARGET GROUP
Basic mathematical background (at the level of third year science students), preferably including a basic course in probability. Previous knowledge of statistical mechanics is not assumed. Proficiency in English is required. (Maximum number of participants: 25.)
COURSE AIM
The school’s aim is to introduce the student to basic mathematical and computational issues raised by the rigorous theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics. Three courses are proposed, designed to provide a balanced view of the conceptual, applied and computational aspects of the field. At the same time, the courses constitute an introduction to very active areas of research at Utrecht University.

SCHOLARSHIPS
A limited number of scholarships in the form of (partial) fee waivers and/or accommodation intended for talented students from developing countries is available. Talented students from other countries can also apply. There are no travel grants. If you seek financial support you should state your request (on a separate sheet) by describing the reasons for applying to this summer school and how your participation will assist you in future studies and your career. You should motivate your financial situation and other means you have available for financing your participation to this summer school. The applications for scholarships will undergo a selection procedure. Students accepted for one of the following Master’s program of the Graduate School of Natural Sciences are exempted from paying the Summer School fee: physics, theoretical physics, computer science, stochastics, and mathematics.
