Music Information Retrieval (MIR) research is motivated by the desire to provide robust, effective and usable methods and tools for all stakeholders with interest in music. During this course particular attention is given to the importance of human understanding and experience of music in MIR research. The topics addressed represent a variety of approaches and place them in context of future MIR research. Subjects include the power of users and context, cross-cultural and ethnic perpectives, gestural approaches and MIR’s contribution to human well-being.

USMIR furthermore provides an exceptional opportunity for even wider international communication because Utrecht University hosts the Eleventh International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2010) conference, which immediately follows USMIR (9-13 August). USMIR is jointly organized by the Department of Information and Computing Sciences (ICS) of Utrecht University and the Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM), Department of Musicology of Ghent University

The activities of the summer school will consist of lectures by MIR experts, workshops, student presentations and discussion.

COURSE DIRECTOR
Dr. F. Wiering (Utrecht University), Dr. M. Lesaffre (Ghent University).
LECTURERS
Lectures will be taught by an international staff of experts in various fields of MIR research. Classes will be supplemented with workshops, student presentations and discussions.

TARGET GROUP
Although its focus is on understanding music, USMIR is a truly interdisciplinary summer school, open for students from the disciplines of computer science, library and information science, engineering, musicology, cognitive science and others. The target level includes master's students in their final year, newly started PhD students and researchers. A maximum of 30 students will be admitted to the course. A scientific committee of experts will evaluate the candidates. (Maximum number of participants 30)
COURSE AIM
Music Information Retrieval (MIR) research is motivated by the desire to provide robust, effective and usable methods and tools for all stakeholders with interest in music. USMIR aims to give participants an intensive training in the most advanced and up-to-date topics in MIR research. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss their research with an international staff of teachers representing a variety of expertise in different MIR domains.

USMIR furthermore provides an exceptional opportunity for even wider international communication. Utrecht University hosts the Eleventh International Society for Music Information Retrieval Conference (ISMIR 2010) conference, which immediately follows USMIR.
