This four-week course takes place two weeks each in Utrecht and Berlin. By combining studies in Utrecht and Berlin, you will be able to get a glimpse of several centuries of art history in Northern Europe, compare differences and similarities between the two sites, and visit a wealth of museums and galleries. Thus, you will have the chance to explore the art scenes of these two vibrant cities both in the past and the present.

A special track consists out of a number of courses, which have been successfully combined in the past. Registering for a special track is more convenient than for each course separately and it also often results to substantial discount.

Discover more than 1,000 years of European Art and European Art History this summer by exploring two of the most exciting art cities in Northern Europe Ė Utrecht and Berlin. Learn about the Golden Age in the Netherlands and the many social, historical, religious and cultural factors that influenced art production during that time. Find out how life shaped art and how the arts shaped life in Utrecht during the 16th century. Then move on to Berlin and go back further in time to medieval times. Profit from Berlinís rich cultural collections and learn about the varying circumstances that shaped the production and reception of German art from the Middle Ages through the twenty-first century. The notions of a national identity and its connections to artistic expressions will be an important element of this course and introduce you to political art and the politics of art.

- Art in Germany: from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century (Berlin)

TARGET GROUP

The course is open to participants (graduates and non-graduates) from all disciplines with a keen interest in Art History.

COURSE AIM

Gives students a broad overview of Dutch Art of the 16th and 17th century through the exploration of culture, daily life, academic approaches, excursions and case-studies.

To give participants an overview of the different historical epochs and styles from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and to acquaint them with the cultural richness of art in Berlin and Germany.

The transfer from Utrecht to Berlin is included in the course fee. Students are responsible for their travel from their home country to Utrecht and from Berlin to their home country.
