A chamber music course open to both bachelor and master students of music (minor/major). Both existing ensembles and individual musicians interested in performing in an ad hoc ensemble are welcome to join. The course focuses on both the standard repertoire and new music – either contemporary music or forgotten repertoire. With participants and members of the Utrecht String Quartets, ensembles will be formed. Violinists, violists and cellists can also take solo masterclasses. Students will each day participate in masterclasses (solo and/or ensemble), spend time practicing and either perform in a (public) concert or attend a concert.

The Utrecht String Quartet, one of the most renowned chamber-music ensembles, is internationally known for its versatility and dynamism. Resident in the Netherlands, the musical world of the Utrecht String Quartet is both borderless and boundless. Its musicians adopt a vibrant, versatile approach to their chosen genre, rejecting traditional “museum piece” interpretations out-of-hand. Even in the most traditional works, they succeed time and again in discovering elements that can be interpreted anew. However, it is their continual search for lost or forgotten repertoire and for their collaboration with contemporary composers that has earned them such an excellent reputation in the music world. International tours to countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe have demonstrated this versatility.

The Utrecht String Quartet is the ‘Quartet in Residence’ of the Utrecht Conservatory. They have extensive experience in coaching music students in chamber music. The quartet is formed by Eeva Koskinen (violin), Katherine Routley (violin), Mikhail Zemtsov (viola) and Sebastian Koloski (cello).

The course focuses on both the standard repertoire and new music – either contemporary music or forgotten repertoire. All participants will work both on a piece from the standard repertoire as well as a new or little known work. Participants may suggest the repertoire they want to work on.

This one week course consists of three basic elements: tuition, practice and performance. Students will each day participate in masterclasses (solo or ensemble), spend time practicing and either perform in a (public) concert or attend a concert.
The course for music students is open to bachelor and master students in performing arts (both major and minor studies, strings and piano (chamber music only)). Both existing ensembles as well as individual musicians wishing to form an ad hoc ensemble can participate. The course is also open to solo violists, violinists and cellists, who will be taught by Eeva Koskinen (violin), Mikhail Zemtsov (viola) and Sebastian Koloski (cello).
