Exploring financing opportunities along the lifecycle of the SME is the topic of this course. How to finance the (first) growth stage of this SME? As banks are reluctant to finance SME ventures, alternative financing instruments such as SME binds, crowd-funding, impact investing, peer-to-peer lending, and others can be used in order to prepare a financial plan, based on a three years forecast and including these alternative financing sources. Bank financing is possible during the (early) growth phase but needs to be prepared in a proposal according to the bankís requirements. How do you manage investors and your bank?

To come up with an idea for a startup company is one thing: sufficient funding is another challenge. How to finance the (first) growth stage of this SME? How do you manage investors and your bank?
Exploring financing opportunities along the lifecycle of the SME company is the topic of this course.
After exploring the financing needs during the startup and early growth phase, next the setup of the optimal capital structure will be discussed. As banks are reluctant to finance a SME venture alternative financing instruments are used like SME binds, crowd-funding, impact investing, peer-to-peer lending, and others in order to prepare a financial plan, based on a three years forecast and including these alternative financing sources. During the (early growth) phase bank financing is required and possible in case the proposal to the bank is attractive. How to come up with such a proposal and how to manage your bank are other parts of this course. The proposal will be tested during a pitch for a bank during a site visit. Lecturers and guest speakers with extensive experience in the field will teach this course focusing on practical applications rather the theoretical frameworks.
Students will learn how to set up a financial plan and a proposal to investors and/or a bank, and experience the (Dragonís Dan) pitch of this plan, understanding the tradeoff made by funders of the plan.
