Complex Industrial and infrastructural systems are increasingly managed on basis of Systems Engineering (SE). The challenge is to create or upgrade complex products like airports, chemical factories, railway infrastructure & rolling stock, port facilities, you name it. These systems typically have a strong interdisciplinary nature and take multiple years to be realized or updated. Systems Engineering provides the means to manage the complexity of these systems and to realize their maximized operational availability and reliability within the financial, time and qualitative boundaries.

In this course you will be introduced to the fundamentals of Systems Engineering and its applications. Several international companies offer to share their experiences of using SE in engineering and maintenance projects (f.i. Prorail, Movares, Arcadis, Strukton, INCOSE, Hogeschool Utrecht ).

Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach combining various methods for specifying, architecting, designing, building and maintaining systems. For systems that are upgraded while being in-service, these activities are done with minimal down-time and maximum performance. Systems Engineering considers company goals as well as technical aspects and stakeholder interests with the aim to provide quality products and services in line with user needs.

Some SE fundamentals are: managing complexity, system architecture; systems thinking; user specification; life cycle optimization; verification & validation. Some of the Process characteristics for SE are: modelling, functional design and physical design.

The interactive course offers participants hands-on experience and challenges students to bring system architecting and systems thinking into practice using cases from the professional world. SE is about how to effectively implement or upgrade a system. Itís about first-time right, dealing with complexity, overcome resistance, fulfilling functionality and creating customer value whilst eliminating waste.
