Interested in learning about refugees and migrants in Europe as well as international studies and what it can offer? This one-week introduction course focuses on the major features of international studies, delving into both theory and practice, from a legal, governance and humanities-based perspective. Through lectures, interactive working groups, expert panels and excursion(s), participants will gain an understanding of the various elements - and their interplay - involved in international studies and refugee/migrant issues.

The effects of globalization, both positive and negative, are becoming increasingly apparent in all fields of study from law to development to international relations. Indeed, more than ever, it is important for students interested in international studies to gain a broader understanding of the interconnectedness of world actors and the complex contexts in which they operate.

This one-week, comprehensive introduction course focuses on the major features of international studies, delving into both theory and practice, from a legal, governance and humanities-based perspective. Each class will be taught by an expert from one of the specialised Masterís programmes from the Utrecht Centre for International Studies (UCIS), including Conflict Studies and Human Rights, European Governance, European Law, International Relations in Historical Perspective and Public International Law. Using the theme of migration and refugee issues throughout the week, the experts will provide the knowledge and analytical tools to equip participants with the ability to engage with global challenges in innovative ways. Through lectures, interactive working groups, expert panels and an excursion, participants will gain an understanding of various elements - and their interplay - involved in international studies. The course is designed for bachelor and masters students with an interest in international studies and refugee/migrant issues.

TARGET GROUP

The course is designed for bachelor and masters students with an interest in international studies and refugee/migrant issues specifically.

COURSE AIM

The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the wide array of fields operating under the heading of international studies and shed light on refugee/migrant issues in Europe from a variety of perspectives.

STUDY LOAD

6 contact hours over minimum 4 days.
2 hours reading per day.
Pass/fail mark on the basis of daily participation

• € 550 - Course + course materials

The UCIS summer school reserves 10 seats for current Utrecht University students. These students will receive a discounted tuition fee [400 EUR instead of 550 EUR, excludes].
