Addiction is an enormous public health problem with major socio-economic consequences. Substance addiction affects more than 100 million people globally and accounts for more than 40% of the financial costs of all major neuropsychiatric disorders. Besides substance addiction, different forms of behavioural addictions can be discerned that are thought to involve similar behavioural and neurobiological mechanisms. The UU summerschool Addiction brings together experts from multiple disciplines in addiction research and treatment. The goal of the course is to teach and train master students and PhD students in recent advances in legal and cultural aspects of addiction, prevalence of addiction, risk factors for addiction, neurobiological mechanisms of addiction, relevant animal models for addiction, cognitive aspects of addiction, and treatment strategies and challenges in addiction care. Each day in the course will be devoted to one of these topics and the participants will be trained on the different subjects through lectures on these topics by expert UU and international lecturers, followed by expert workshops for more in-depth discussions on the various aspects of addiction. Moreover, the participants will work on specific assignments, through extensive discussions among participants, expert speakers and the course coordinators. At the completion of this UU summerschool Addiction, the participants will have a multidisciplinary view on addiction research, from the societal and epidemiological level to basic research and addiction care.
