This summer course is a joint activity from University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and University College London (UCL). During this summer course, participants will learn the key characteristics of Big Data in health research. In addition, you will learn recent developments in health informatics to collect and access Big Data for research purposes. You will discuss different approaches for data analysis and learn how to visualize Big Data. The primary focus of this summer school lies in the area of Big Data for medical research purposes.
The digital universe is expanding continuously. The huge amount of information is often referred to as Big Data. there are four dimensions to Big Data: its volume (i.e., scale of data), variety (i.e., different forms of data), veracity (i.e., uncertainty of data) and velocity (i.e., analysis of streaming data). These four dimensions make that Big Data have a huge potential to answer questions that could not be answered before. For example, in biomedical sciences, researchers increasingly make use of these Big Data, by pooling real-time data from multiple sources including electronic healthcare records in order to e.g. detect diseases at an early stage or assess effects of medical interventions in a timely manner. During the summer school 'Big Data' you will be introduced to the field of Big Data. You will learn about recent developments in health informatics in collecting and accessing Big Data for research purposes. You will discuss differences with ordinary data analysis and learn how to visualize Big Data. Focus will be on use Big Data for medical research purposes.
The target group of this course includes advanced BSc and MSc students in biomedical sciences with a basic understanding of epidemiology and (medical) statistics.
At the end of this course, participants will have an understanding of what Big Data are and how- and to what extent - these can be used for (medical) research purposes.
Monday - Friday between 09.00 and 17.00h
