Introduction to L1 and L2 acquisition

Organizing institution
Utrecht University, Faculty of Humanities (UU)
Course code
S26
Course fee (incl. housing)
€ 400
Level
Bachelor level

This course combines an introduction to L1 and L2 acquisition with introductions to the basics of phonology and semantics. Students will be guided through the basic concepts of these two branches of linguistics and their intersections with acquisition studies.

We start with a discussion of major concepts in L1 and L2 acquisition and illustrate these on the basis of different stages of phonological development (phonemes, syllable structure, stress, intonation and words). We then move on to the realm of semantics, provide a first introduction to the basic concepts of this discipline and show how they provide interesting new insights into L1 and L2 acquisition.
