If you expect to work with the software Mplus, this course can help you to get started. This course is a compact 1-day workshop on using Mplus, how to get the syntax running, how to interpret the output and what to do with error messages.

The course starts with an introduction of structural equation modeling with a special emphasis on the specific way Mplus is used to specify and estimate models. A demonstration is given how Mplus syntax should be written and what common mistakes are. Furthermore, we will discuss in detail, the output of Mplus and what to do with it. We also discuss common encountered error messages and what to do with them. Finally, there is some time to play around with Mplus and perform your (first?) Mplus analysis. The models that we will run in Mplus are a basic regression model and a confirmatory factor analysis. The course is not about analyzing complex models, but the main goal is to get you started.

Prerequisites:
Good working knowledge of multivariate analysis is assumed. Some knowledge of structural equation modeling is helpful, not mandatory.
We recommend Kline (2005). Principles and Practice of Structural Equation Modeling. New York: The Guilford Press, or the 3rd edition (2010). For a quick introduction into structural equation modeling you can read: J.J. Hox & T.M. Bechger (1998), An introduction to structural equation modeling. Family Science Review, 11, 354-373 (available in the publications section of www.joophox.net ).

On April 12-13, the 11th International Multilevel Conference is held in Utrecht. This ‘Mplus - how to get started course’ could be followed as a pre-conference workshop. Furthermore, if you are familiar with multilevel models, but not with Mplus, this course is a good preparation for the post-conference workshop on Dynamic multilevel modeling with Mplus 8.

Please be aware that we discuss only very simple models during this one-day course. If you’re interested in more complex models (e.g. latent class analysis, multilevel models, latent growth models), please take a look at our Mplus summer schools (S20 & S23 ).
