This course will provide an overview of how psycholinguistic theories have influenced accounts of language disorders and how such disorders in turn have informed linguistic theories. We will focus on developmental disorders of language and reading, such as Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and dyslexia.

This course addresses the place of language within the wider context of human psychology and cognition, focusing on pathology. By looking at the language profile in a variety of disorders (both language-related and general cognitive or behavioral disorders) we set out to determine whether language is a unique and isolated module within the human mind and brain, or whether it is strongly connected to other aspects of cognition. Along the way we discuss a variety of linguistic theories, experimental studies and innovative methodologies that have brought psycholinguists closer to understanding the place of language in the human mind.
